6 Tips For a Plastic Free Bathroom

6 Tips For a Plastic Free Bathroom

These changes are very simple and help you to live in a more sustainable and environmentally friendly way. That’s why 6 tips for a Plastic Free Bathroom!

Take a look in your bathroom. You may find that most products (such as deo, body lotion, face wash, shower gel, shampoo, makeup and more) are packaged in plastic. In addition, they can contain many harmful chemicals. Your skin absorbs all these harmful chemicals, so that they end up in your body. So we should really only use products on our skin that we can also eat to prevent these chemicals from entering your body.

1. LEAVE WHAT YOU DON’T NEED & USE WHAT YOU HAVE

To be honest this is the most important tip. We often have at least 4 different products for each purpose. In addition, they are often packaged in plastic and all contain harmful chemicals. If you really want to contribute to a better environment, I advise you to start reorganizing your bathroom. For example, products that you have not used or have not yet opened can be given away so that someone else can use it. You can use the other products 1 by 1. Make sure you adhere to 1 shower gel, 1 shampoo, 1 conditioner at the same time.

USE WHAT YOU HAVE

Once a product is empty, continue with the next one. In this way you create space in your bathroom step by step. Try to dispose of the empty bottles correctly by separating your waste. It is important to use what you have before you go out and buy new products. Otherwise this cycle of buying too much never ends. The products that you have at home have already made an impact since you have already bought it. So use this first.

2. SHAMPOO, CONDITIONER AND SOAP

There is a very easy replacement for shower gel, body lotion, shampoo and conditioner. This is going to save you a lot of plastic bottles. Believe it or not, this replacement does not contain any plastic or packaging at all! This lasts longer and you therefore save money.

Any guesses? The answer is … Soap Bars! As simple as that. There many different options such as shampoo and conditioner bars. You can find them packaging free, or sometimes they are wrapped in paper. If you see them packed in plastic, don’t buy them! Now you know that there are alternatives where you don’t have to waste plastic.

WHERE TO BUY?

Soap for body and face can be purchased at “Dille & Kamille“. This soap is based on olive oil and is so soft that you can also wash your face with it. Palm oil-free, pure vegetable and colored with clay powder. I have the Green Tea soap and this was 3.95 (150 grams). I have been using this for more than 4 months (!!).

They also sell shampoo bars and containers where you can store your soaps. I advise you to buy a container (or maybe you already have one at home!) To store your bars. If you leave them in the shower or next to the sink, there is a chance that it will be wasted if it comes in contact with water. If you store them in a container, they will last longer and you will enjoy it more! I found one in a thrift store and I still use it!

They also sell Lush, Shampoo Bars, Plastic Free Amsterdam, SMIR & Loofys online. Click here if you are curious about more sales points!

3. BAMBOO BRUSH YOUR TEETH!

You can easily switch from a plastic toothbrush to a bamboo toothbrush. Easy swap, and no plastic free! You can find bamboo toothbrushes at Etos, Holland & Barrett and Ekoplaza. Unfortunately they cost a little more, but I am certainly willing to spend money if this causes less pollution of plastic. Of course you can also find them online, but I prefer to buy them in a drugstore or supermarket to save on the packaging that comes with the shipment.

4. DEO

This plastic free deo is one of my favorite swaps. It prevents skin irritations and you don’t have to feel guilty about the regular deo packaging. The chemicals that are released when you use it can also be very bad for your health. Also because you inhale this easily.

The Ben & Anna brand is highly recommended. can be found at Holland & Barrett or online. It is 100% natural, vegan, cruelty free and contains 0% aluminum. The deodorant is made in the Netherlands and the company is based in Germany. In addition, the company also supports ocean clean-ups! I use the “Vanilla Orchid”, but there are many different scents. It works a little differently than normal deodorants, but the benefits make up for that. 1 stick costs 7.99, but lasts a long time.

CRYSTAL DEO

You can also opt for crystal deo. This is also 100% natural and made from minerals. These minerals protect against sweating and kill bacteria. They do not close the skin pores, so

they continue to breathe (and not get irritated!). The ones I found are usually packaged in plastic, but at least the product itself contains no harmful chemicals. I used to have one when I was younger. I bought this in New Zealand. I was there for a wedding. This worked perfectly (until I broke it, so be careful … :).

5. SAFETY RAZOR

Disposable razor blades cannot be recycled because they are made of different materials. You can change the blades of the Safety Razor. They usually last 1 month. The holder would last a lifetime if you take good care of it. This saves a lot of plastic!

SKIN CARE

Olive oil, avocado oil, argan oil, grape seed oil and coconut oil are super alternative to makeup remover and body lotion. All these oils can be found in a glass container and do not contain harmful chemicals. Make sure you check the ingredients and labels on the bottles! If you are sensitive to acne, then coconut oil may not be the best option because it can make it worse

There are stores in the Netherlands where you can even top up your bottles after you have made them up! Check out this page for more information.
