A lot of toothpaste is harmful to the environment. Mostly because of the plastic packaging but also because of microplastics and that are in the toothpaste itself. So not only harmful to the environment, but also to health! In addition, there is a chance that these microplastics end up in nature and in the ocean. Enough reason to find a solution for this. For example, make your own toothpaste!

  1. COCONUT OIL AND BAKING POWDER

Probably the most famous DIY toothpaste there is, and also my personal favorite. You only need 3 ingredients and will be ready in no time. Coconut oil strengthens your teeth and gums and baking powder prevents tartar and absorbs bacteria.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 3 tablespoons 100% coconut oil (preferably organic, fair trade)
  • 1½ tablespoons baking powder
  • 14 drops of essential peppermint oil (preferably natural, organic and for internal use)

INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Mix all ingredients in a container
  • And you’re done … ??

Yes! That’s it … I recommend you try it out before you start making larger quantities. If you don’t like it, you don’t have to waste too much.

  1. BENTONITE CLAY

This is also one of my favorites. Bentonite clay absorbs and removes bacteria from your mouth and leaves behind minerals that feed your teeth. This is also a good option if you are sensitive to acne and do not want to use coconut oil.

Note: make sure you do not use any metal while making this. It will kill the minerals from the bentonite clay.

INGREDIENTS:

  • Holland & Barrett Teeth Whitening Powder (€ 4.52)
  • Water
  • Peppermint essential oil (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Put 3 tablespoons of powder in a bowl
  • Add a few drops of water during mixing, to the desired thickness
  • Add peppermint oil for more taste! (optional)

The powder also contains charcoal, which gives you whiter teeth! Just don’t be shocked by the color while brushing 🙂 Make sure you use the toothpaste within about 2 weeks, or keep it in the fridge so that it doesn’t go to waste.

  1. TOOTHPASTE TABLETS

This option is ideal if you are busy with school or work and do not have too much time to make it yourself. This option can also be found in plastic-free packaging!

You put toothpaste tablets in your mouth and chew it like chewing gum, until it gets the consistency of toothpaste. Then you can use a bamboo toothbrush to brush your teeth, and that’s that! Nice Zero Waste option.

You can buy these tablets in different stores such as Lush. You can also find them online at Bite or DENTTABS.

TOOTHBRUSH

At the drugstore (Etos, Holland & Barret, Ekoplaza) you can find toothbrushes made of bamboo in plastic. Relatively they are unfortunately a bit more expensive, but I think it’s totally worth it!
